We decided to change out some of our door knobs with some ($13) oil-rubbed bronze ones from True Value yesterday…
We shot a little video tutorial about the switcheroos, too:

Over the next few months, we plan to install several 5-panel doors like the one below…

I love watching your videos! You guys are always so happy. It has this sunshine effect on anyone watching. Happy 2012 to you guys; may your dreams come true!
Nancy
All the best to both of you in 2012! You have the greatest web site/blog!
Julie
Perfect timing! I have an antique purple glass knob I’m going to try to put on by myself, so wish me luck 😉
I love that you are able to enjoy working on your home with your husband. Just a friendly reminder to not take that for granted–which I’m sure you don’t!–but, there are lots of ladies–ok, maybe only me!–who would love to have that bond!
PS–painted my kitchen in all your colors this week… You’ve got great taste & I’m copying you every step of the way! Love it!

I love your DIY videos. They are so helpful and entertaining! Happy New Year!

Love the out takes! Too funny! I sure could have used this tutorial about 6mo ago when we had to replace our garage door knob. I looked just like Kevin in your funnies video. I would be interested to know where you plan on getting your new doors. We are in a new home and would like to change ours out with the 5 panel doors when the budget is right 🙂
Sarah @ Cozy.Cottage.Cute.
Eeeek! Those are the same five-panel doors we’ve picked to replace all of the plain jane ones scattered throughout our house. We’ve already done the closets in the five-panel bi-fold doors but haven’t done any of the big doors yet.
Can’t WAIT to see how they look at your place so I can show my hubby how good they’re going to look. So exciting!! (Yes, doors get me giddy.)
😉

I hear you on the lots of laughing part! How are we, at the Durdan Household, spending New Year’s Eve? Installing a new water heater because our old one decided it didn’t want to work in 2012 and it retired yesterday! 🙂 So, here’s to the new addition to our home for 2012! (Don’t relish your newness title for long though water heater, because we have a new exterior back door in the garage waiting to be installed and new windows on order to replace our original 100+ year old windows. Happy New Year!
Linda @ it all started with paint
Ha! Love the outtakes! At least your husband laughs … mine just curses! I’ve slowly been replacing our ugly doorknobs (okay, I have my husband do that particular task) but have to space out my requests for fear of ruining his entire weekend!

Beautiful knobs and love the five panel doors! Are you going to do your annual favorites of 2011 post series? I always love it!!

laughing out loud at the outtakes! bless Kevin’s heart…hope you all got the other doors done fast. I took the cheap route on my playroom doors…painted the knobs instead of buying new ones…maybe no one will look too closely at them! (Now I want to paint the metal on the overhead light fixtures…hmmm.) Hope you have a fun New Year’s Eve. We are headed to see TinTin at the movies when the Tech game is over. Go jackets!

That was a great post very easy to follow, thnaks Kevin @ Layla

That was so funny! On the other hand, I did learn how to replace a doorknob so that’s great. Thanks to Kevin for that. I love those five panel doors, too.

Kevin has beautiful white teeth!!!!!! Does he use a special toothpaste??
I noticed that the pleated poppy used matching ORB hinges on their
bathroom door. Have you ever painted existing hinges to match the
knob???? I have several hinges that do not match, and would like to
remedy the situation. Thanks, Layla, for all your wonderful DIY projects. Blessings to both of you in the New Year. Lyndia

Great tutorial – you guys make it look easy! Happy New Year to you both.

All the years I’ve been watching you two, you still know how to make me laugh! I’m so glad that in all your growth in success, you are still the same ol’ “Layla & Kev” ~ and even prouder that you are a fellow Minnesotan! 😉
Wishing you a blessed and prosperous 2012 with lots and lots and LOTS of LAUGHTER!!

I also would love to know what you did about the hinges?….really want to replace the gold doorknobs but the gold hinges have me stumped….priced everything out to replace also…and wowzers…..going to be a huge, huge financial investment…..is there some other way or should I just go slow and replace those as I can?……so enjoy your blog…keep up the good work!!!

Try Sophisticated Finished Blackened Bronze Metallic Surfacer. You can get it at Michael’s Craft Stores. I’ve used it on all of my drawer pulls. Also used it to touch up hinges that I’ve gotten paint on. Works great.
Christine Trebendis
Great tutorial…lots of laughs…best way to start off the New Year! Thanks for sharing…Happy New Year to you both!
Erin
I love the doors! Do you have a source where you plan in purchasing them?
Amy c
I was wondering the same!

Earlier this year, I decided I also wanted to change out my shiny brass “contractor” knobs for some oil rubbed bronze ones. However, after calculating the cost (which came out to be well over $400 total), it became clear that we couldn’t afford it. Not deterred, I set about trying to figure out how to get the look I wanted on a budget. The solution? SPRAY PAINT! Seriously! The hard part was taking all the knobs off and sanding them down to get that shiny finish off so that the spray paint would adhere properly. But, once that was done, I just took them outside, set them on a piece of styro-foam (this helps to keep them standing up and in place) and sprayed away. I splurged to get the good Krylon paint with the trigger instead of the push botton thingy on the top. The added bonus was the Krylon had the primer already built in which meant saved time for me! If you go this route, I warn you ahead of time that you WILL have to wait about 24 hours before putting the knobs back on to let them cure properly otherwise they will nick and scratch. But if you allow the proper curing time, you can have “new” oil rubbed bronze doorknobs in your home for about $8 a can. The end result – they not only LOOK great but they’ve held up wonderfully! And our door knobs get quite a bit of use! 😉

Boy-wish I had seen this a couple of weeks ago. Just replaced the doorknob in our bedroom because the door wouldn’t catch so the cats and dog could open the door but I couldn’t teach them how to close it. Our house is a little over 100 years old but I think the old knob was from the 60’s. I see some mistakes I made from watching your video. My removal included a hacksaw and a rasp to file the hole down some since it was too small to fit the new (also oil rubbed bronze) knob. It was a learning experience and I’m happy to say I did it myself and didn’t have to hire a professional. Much better outcome that the time I tried to change the toilet lid and had to buy a new toilet! Love your blog.

I have no idea if they’re the size you need, or how you’d get them in Kansas City, but I found some 5 panel doors on craigslist and immediately thought of you!!! Just in case the planets line up perfectly & you could miraculously use them and get them, here’s the link

Dana
my question is similar to another one, what about your hinges? Is it home fashion faux pas to have hinges in a different color?
Layla
Hey Dana!
We’re slowly but surely switching out all our brass hinges for oil-rubbed bronze ones, too! 😀
Amanda
Love them! We are currently in the fix this house up for us now as we want to sell and move closer to the country in the next few years. We went with a Lowes hollow core door, really wanted the 5 panel, but with 4 door in a 6 foot hallway we were worried about it being way too busy. Anyway, we got a call the next day that a new promo started so our new hollow core doors were being upgraded to duracore (basically solid) doors for free. SO excited, we currently have no trim and super flat honey oak hollow doors with bright brass hardware. Thanks for all the inspiration (and who am I kidding, motivation)!! -Amanda sunnybrooketc.blogsopot.com
