Happy Monday, friends! 😀
Did you catch my story on Instagram the other day? The one about the pile of reclaimed wood we’ve had under our house for a couple years? Yep. I almost forgot about it, it’s been so long.
We’re thinking it would add a fun pop if we tacked it up to the wall behind my desk:
Clearly, we need to cover in something, and something we already own would be great. We’ll have to remove a little bit more drywall (fun, fun!), but I’m excited to see what all those muted blues, grays and greens look like up there!
Before we put them up, I’m going to seal our boards with Peel Stop. It dries as a rock hard, clear barrier and it stops paint from peeling, so everything (including possible lead based paint) will be forever locked underneath the protective coating. It’s pretty amazing stuff.
Here are some other reclaimed painted wood wall inspiration photos I found around the web:
Pretty pretty!
I also found this great wallpaper while I was surfing around too:
Anywho- I’m excited to finally get that wall covered, so I can get some drapes hung up. I love the way my desk faces the bulk of the first floor, but I’m not a huge fan of having uncovered windows behind me while I work there at night. I know it’s silly, but what can I say? I just get the heebie jeebies sometimes. 🙂
Last but not least, a couple of you wanted to see a close-up shot of the “Sonny plate” hanging on the wall in this room, so I snapped one this afternoon:
I first blogged about it back in January of 2013, and at the time, I mentioned that we’d eventually write our kiddo’s name and homecoming date on that little tag. What a surreal experience to finally be able to fill in those boxes! 🙂
See you Wednesday, friends!

Layla, I’m so glad you told us about Peel Stop. I have always wondered what all these restoration shows on TV did to protect people from the lead paint peeling. I have a house built in 1939 and when I bought the house I had to sign that I knew there was possible lead paint in my new home. I will look into this product. Love your blog
Candice
CanYou paint over the Peel Stop?
Layla
I would imagine you can, but I’d have to check the website to make sure.

We did a reclaimed wood wall in my shop and now are cladding the coffee bar in my new coffee house with the same wood. It is a showstopper! I love the look so much!
Layla
Sounds awesome, Christy! 😀

I see no insulation in the lower wall behind your desk. Do you insulate before you add on the reclaimed board? Or are you in such a warm climate that it is not necessary?
Another question is about the small opening in the wall beneath your gallery (above the basket), what is the purpose for this?
Sorry, maybe you have talked about these things in other posts that I have missed. I love your decorating style and can’t wait to see the tour of Kevin’s parents’ place!
Layla
Hi Dianne!
There isn’t any insulation there because that wall (and that one window) backs up to Jim and Katie’s breakfast room.
The small opening is for our Kit-Cat. He goes through that (and eventually into another room that we can access from outside) to use his litter box. 🙂

Can’t wait to see this wall and the barn addition compelted. Check out one of my favs: http://livingvintageco.com/
It will give you inspiration galore, especially as the blogger is a beadboard expert!

I was just looking at her site yesterday! 😀 So fun!

Love the application in Rose Cottage photo. The fact that the flooring runs in the opposite direction from the wall boards was a visual bonanza. I think yours will be awesome seeing it when you enter your front door! And thanks for the Peel Stop info. I too wondered what one would do about locking lead and/or peeling paint to make it safe. I had no idea this existed.

Did the plate with Sonny’s name on it come with the sweet handle or did you add it?
Gail
Love love love.

We are in the midst of a re-do of a canned ham (vintage repro) camper, + I am trying to persuade my husb-equiv to put up some faux distressed wood wallpaper! (Paper’s lighter in weight than real wood) I’ve got myself an uphill battle, but fingers crossed!

Thank you so much for telling us about Peel Stop. I have been wondering what I could use to put on my old pieces of painted wood so the paint would stay on!
Oh it is going to look so good with those beautiful boards on your wall! I am excited to see it when it is complete.
Love the Sonny Plate story!!
Lynda
Hello,
just a silly question…how do you hang your lovely plates on the wall?

Layla
Hi Lilly!
I used Disc Hangers! http://dischangers.com/
Rose L.
I like the Rose Cottage and Coastal Living ones. I have seen Chip and Joanna Gaines from HGTV do that before and loved it.

Love that you can use materials you have….real bonus.
Just a thought, you may want to use insulation in the wall even if it is not an outside wall. Would make it more sound proof and private for both sides.
Layla
Great idea, Sarah! The builder’s actually left us a roll of insulation just for that purpose. So glad it’s almost time to roll it in there! 🙂

I love a good reclaimed wood wall (I’ve done several for people over the years)! Love the colors of your wood. I’m sure it will turn out beautifully!
