Hi. We’re Dusty and Sandy- but today, you can call us Pooped and Plum-Tuckered.
I shot the following video of Pooped today.
He wanted to talk a bit about the infamous edge sander we mentioned in our last post. And when I say “he wanted to talk a bit”, I mean “he hoped the right configuration of words would magically fall out of his mouth when he opened it to speak because he is completely exhausted right now”…
(Click here to watch it on YouTube)
I’m not sure my weak-as-wet-spaghetti arms could’ve held the camera up much longer either, so I’m glad he was able to get that all out in two quick takes.
Our animals seem to be a little out of sorts lately too.
Mr. Bean has taken up residence in my closet. At almost any hour, you can find him sprawled out behind my box o’ socks…underneath a big, old plastic bag fulla’ wedding dress.
Max, on the other hand, stakes his daily claim on top of one of the euro pillows on our bed. He curls up there immediately after his morning walk and pretty much stays put until bedtime. (Except for the occasional bathroom break, of course….which may or may not occur outside because he’s clearly the reigning King of I’ll-Let-Ya-Know-I-Gotta-Go-Sometimes-But-Not-Every-Time.)
We’ll continue to plug away with our projects though. There’s no turnin’ back now!
(Me and Max, in our home office. I mean, dining room. I mean, master bedroom.)
If all goes according to plan, we’ll be back soon with some brand spankin’ new shots of our splendiferously-sealed hardwood floor.
If not, you can probably find us in the back of my closet…just beyond my box o’ socks…right below a big, old plastic bag full’a wedding dress.
Peace, hugs, and protective ear plugs,

Dear Pooped and Plum Tuckered —
Sanding wood floors is no easy task! I admire you two. We installed all our own flooring throughout the house, but my husband has said if they ever need resanding he is hiring it out! (This is from a man who is dreaming of buying and saving for a sawmill to cut/sand his own boards to his specifications for woodworking and trim work – he loves it. Great job!! Get some rest. 🙂
lauren
🙂 when we were doing major remodeling i had to take my cat in to the vet because he was getting STRESS PIMPLES on his chin! stress pimples on a cat?!?! what the what? apparantly he is just very sensitive to his surroundings… poor kitty. 😉
Kristin @ everythingZamora
The cat I had growing up did the same thing! She wasn’t eating, losing weight, etc. We thought it was the end. The vet said, “She’s fine, just stressed.” Once the renovation was completed, she was back to normal.

Oh my goodness that must be exhausting. Brings back some bad memories I have of tiling a whole kitchen. About half way through I was so over it. But it looked gorgeous when I was done! I bet the floors will be beautiful and then you can lay down and sleep on them!
Sherri Langford-Farrell
Hi! I thought we were Dusty and Sandy here in TX!!!! We’ve been taking out tile flooring from the kitchen with a chipping hammer, aka mini-jack hammer!!! I’m still vibrating 24 hours later! LOL Not for the faint of heart. It took 3 rounds of shampoo to get the tile gunk out of my hair and even though we put up plastic from ceiling to floor, everything is still covered with a layer of “dead tile” dust. I’d be happy we’re done, but we still have a master bathroom and entryway (guest bath and laundry room may get skipped) to chip away at!!!! Oh, the joys of redoing your home yourself. We feel your pain!!!! Good luck!!!!!
Jen @ Lita's World
How exciting! Can’t wait to see! Isn’t it amazing how exhausting sanding can be?! And what a mess, but somehow it’s always worth it in the end!
Amanda @ House Revivals
Oh, I know this is exhausting! Baby those backs — they’ve gotta get you through the next fifty or seventy-five years!

Love the animated characters in the corner of the closet – you guys are too funny! Good luck getting it done! Take care, Laura
Sandra
I met my hubby just days after he had purchased a house, and our first dates were me rescuing him from the big floor sander to take the dogs for a walk. I remember seeing him pushing the machine back and forth across the wood floors and having to jump around in the front window to catch his attention after my repeated hammering at the front door drew no response.
My memories include me brushing fine wood dust out of his hair while he commented that he would NEVER sand floors again, he would hire that one job out.
And this from a man who has transformed our current home from drab to fab!
So best of luck with your sanding and refinishing! I can’t wait to see the finished product!!
Kevin
I can relate! I feel like I’m going to be forever covered in dust. I was so pumped to get started on these floors, but now I’m ready to be done with it and enjoy the finished product! Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Layla,
I fell in love with your kitchen a while back and you put an idea in my head. Well fast forward to today and I am unvieling my new kitchen that I restyled with no hired help.
Never doubt the power of a determined DIY’er.
Thanks for having such great taste in home design.

I don’t envy that job. That’s why we paid somebody to do our kitchen and laundry!
A tip from the guys that refinished our floors. Remove the quarter round and you can get the full edge and eliminate that dark stripe. You do end up having to replace the quarter round cause it’s nearly impossible to remove without breaking. But it is relatively cheap!
Melinda
In our first house, my husband did our floors too and it was a big job. And what a mess. We had dust everywhere. It will sure be beautiful when you are finished! Hang in there. It will all be worth it!!! Can’t wait to see everything finished. Love & blessings from NC!
Ricki Jill Treleaven
I have been struggling with a craft project all day, and I am all pooped out, too! I can’t wait to see the finished product!!! 😀
Hang in there!!!

I know how you feel! I refinished our floors and I was so sore and tired! I’m excited to see how yours turn out. A word about the cost of renting, our rental cost about the same but we needed like $300 in sand paper. That adds a bit to the bottom line!
Layla
WOW! 300 smackers? Ouch!
:-O
I think we’ve only spent about $75 in paper as of today, but don’t ya hate it when a piece breaks RIGHT after you put it on? $3 down the drain!
mike @HA
I forgot to mention that was 1,000 sqft!

Your little cartoon adapted Kevin and Layla are one of my fave thing about your posts.
That sentence would have been covered in red in my middle school grammar class. Hope you know what I meant.
Layla
Why, no, Kristin…what ever do you mean? 😉 *wink*

Melody
On second thought, I don’t think I want to ever handle a project like that, lol
I admire you both for tackling a project like this. You all are warriors!
lizziefitz
AWWW, take a nap with puppy! what about a palm sander for the corners?
Laura
Kevin sounds a little like us — the more tired we are the stronger the southern accent comes out 🙂 Great job, can’t wait to see the final product!
Cindy Chapman
It’ll all be worth it! You hate living in the mess, but once you’re done and you can clean, you’ll love it! (Oh, add in a little sleep for each of you too!)
Leslie
Dear Dusty and Sandy AKA P and PT – you guys are amazing! I wish so MUCH that I had 1) such good ideas and 2) such a funny, cute husband to work with! : )
Suzanne
I can’t wait to see it all done.
But what I really want to know is what’s in those cups? Seeing those in your pics always makes me feel at home. Mine’s always full of diet pepsi with just a little bit of ice. 🙂
Penny
Hi! I am new to your blog, loving seeing all your progress & vids! Layla totally inspired me to sprinkle starfish around the house 😀
Debbie
We survived a weekend of sanding the entire first floor of our 1906 Cincinnati house with heavily waxed heart pine floors – with a three year old and a 4 month old. You can do it! Yes, we had a friend help, but he brought his wife and three kids so I was the social director, nursing mother, errand runner – we kept running out of sandpaper, corner sander and chef extraordinaire! Steve and Mike did a fantastic job. But the project was worth it! I was not sure we would ever get all the dust out of the house!
Katy
Hi Layla,
I normally don’t comment even though I LOVE your style and stalk your blog literally everyday, but I just had to tell you how flattered I was that you commented on my blog today!! It means so much and I really appreciate it!
And I totally understand your dilemma at the moment–being exhausted but knowing you can’t turn back is no fun, but I’m sure you will have beautiful floors (to match the rest of your stunning house) in the end and it will all be completely worth it!
Thank you for the inspiration!
Janette @ The2Seasons
All of the hard work will pay off in a big way when you enjoy the finished project.
angie @ seriouslyahomemaker

hope you guys have sneaked some naps in! I want max’s job – don’t you? that sounds lovely to get up, have something to drink, take a little walk and then curl up (of course we’d have to be able to read blogs while curled up!) but that does sound fantastic!
Can’t wait to see your final results!
