Y’all! I am so excited to share with you that we’ve been asked to participate in a fun rug designing challenge! 😀
And when I say “we”, I literally mean you and me because I’m reeeeally hoping you’ll want to join me in the design process as I blog about ideas from now til July 6th. I’ll explain more about that in a minute, but first, let me tell you about the contest:
In a nutshell, the folks at Annie Selke (the creative gal who founded Pine Cone Hill and Dash & Albert) are hosting their first ever “Rug Design Challenge” and they’ve invited fifteen design bloggers to submit as many designs as we can dream up. You may be familiar with some (or all!) of the other bloggers who are participating:
Such an honor to be a part of that super-creative group!
The Annie Selke blog says, “These bloggers are tasked with creating their dream rugs with the chance to have them produced by Dash & Albert“, and that folks can “cfollow the design process and vote on each of the designs via the Annie Selke Instagram feed”. Their media partner, Apartment Therapy, will be “documenting the whole process, too, right through to the end, when the capsule collection is presented at High Point Market in April of 2018”.
WOW! Do you see why I said “we” now? This challenge is about creating a collection of rugs that could work well in lots of folks’ homes (not just mine) so I’m reeeally hoping you’d like to be a part of the design process too! I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions in the comment section any time I blog about the design process along the way, and if you have any to share before I get started next week, I’m all ears in the meantime, too!
Tell me what your dream rug would look/feel like. What room would it go in? What size or shape would it be?

I’m loving the look of the new patterned concrete tiles,( mostly seen in black and white) but afraid of investing in what might be a trend! But a rug can be easily switched out!
Whenever I select a rug it has to feel good to a bare foot! and if it has some texture to it that’s a bonus!
Meghan
I love that idea too only I’ed love to see one that looks like a quilt almost as each tile is a different pattern, and in subtle shades of blues and greens and whatever else as long as it’s subtle and soft and not too bold. 😉

Hi Layla! The rug I dream of would be for my living room. It would be several shades of green and some gray-green, with some white lines, light gray lines, and even a couple mahogany tiny lines in it. Oooh la la! It would be pretty flat, not tufted. A good pad under it and … !! Awesomeness. And it would be 12′ x 18′.
This rug does not exist anywhere. I’ve looked for it everywhere!

I would like to see a rug in neutral or natural colors of green, light brown, maybe a little yellow. I like the size of 5’x8′. Comfortable, not a stripe and easy to clean.
Amy Griffin
I’d like to see a striped rug that includes a neutral base with nautical colors like navy, red and yellow in the mix. You could also do it with coastal colors. Maybe even mix up your textures, too. One stripe could be plush, another loop, another geometric texture. It might not look as cool in photos, but you could do a solid neutral with stripes of different textures.

I’m needing a new rug for my living room now!! (Yesterday?)
It would be soft- good to play and lay on, easily vacuumed- with neutral blues…. 8×10′ ish in size.
Ann Geistfeld
My input would be no smaller than 8×10 with a back that would not scratch or damage the finish on hardwood flooring. Also like the design to be all over the rug- not just in center so if in dining area the table covers it or just around edge so if used in sitting room the furniture covers the design.
You go girl!…Fun and challenging for sure!

Thank you, friend! I loved reading your comment- great ideas! I do need a couple of runners though, so I think it would be fun to dream up a 2.5 x 8′ one too! 🙂

In the south, we need plush rugs made out of polypropelene instead of wool. We need them to look like indoor rugs; not cheap outdoor rugs.

I agree with Liz. I’ve hunted for a good looking indoor-outdoor rug to use as a runner in my kitchen and have yet to find one that works. I know that most runners are smaller in width, but I would like to see one that is wider for my galley kitchen. I love stripes, but I also like plaids, both in colors and in neutrals. Dash and Albert are some of my favorite rugs. Their rugs used to be brighter and cuter, and I miss that. I’m not afraid of color. One other thing, I would love to find a cute neutral 12 by 12 square rug for my round breakfast room table, but I’m starting to believe they don’t exist.

A circle rug is the hardest to find! I would love one for the top of my stairs in the hallway. 4 foot round with the the beige and blue stripes would be fun.

I recently needed a 9×12 size for my living room, and couldn’t find one I could afford and liked too. I ended up going back to my flooring store and had two rugs cut to the sizes I needed out of the same carpet in my bedrooms. They had them bound, and even delivered them free.
But I still would like a runner for my kitchen — fairly dark (maybe gray) with some “specks” that would hide a crumb or spill a bit. Non-slip and safe for hardwood. I have the “slate” appliances and creamy white shaker cabinets, so something that would lean toward “farmhouse” or shaker styling with that slate color. Can’t wait to see what all of you come up with!

I need a new rug for my living room – 8 x 10 or 10 x 12. I’d like a light neutral background with a lattice pattern and random pops of a vintage floral. Navy would be fabulous for the lattice but for my living room I need an asparagus green and the floral could have muted shades of yellow, red, pink, mauve, orange, pretty much any color. I prefer a carpet type rug but a flat one with a great pad would be fine also.

How great would it be to have different runners long enough to change out the look of your stairs. Long enough to cover all the stairs. How about a rug that has softness but can be cleaned outside with a hose. I have 2 large labs and I need to take them out at least twice a year and spray them down while the sun dries them. Quilted looks are great.

My dream rug has a dark back ground of black or charoal gray with big paisleys splashed about in deep purple with accents of grassy green, bright orange and cream.

I LOVE Annie Selke. I have been stomping on about 15 of her rugs with 4 kids and dogs for years! I’ve been wishing she would design an 8-foot round wool or an indoor/outdoor rope rug. How about vintage floral wool with lots of butter yellow or an indoor/outdoor round rope one in a strawberry color…oh gosh how fun is this…!!

I love Dash and Albert striped rugs and would love to have one in my kitchen. However, I have a long, wide space between the island and the sink and have not been able to find a rug that is big enough, but not too big. I like the length of a runner, but it needs to be wider to work for me. Also, I think it is very nice if kitchen rugs can be washed, otherwise they just get ruined because…FOOD! I like colorful stripes with neutral stripes, but also like solid colors with texture woven in. Will be fun to see how this goes…

I can’t go past a “floral” anything, so I’m thinking a floral rug would be fun. My two fave colors of the moment are red and turquoise.

My dream rug would be a big, fluffy and white living room rug. I know none of those go together in real life, but I would love a white one that didn’t get dirty and a fluffy one where I could lie down in. hahah =)

One of my dreams in a ru is always the same. It is one that smells like nothing synthetic. Usually thatears no adhesives are used, or no backing. Ahhh, it is a dream to have a pretty rug and to breath fresh air, all at the same time!! 😉

I would love a neutral buffalo check, indoor /outdoor that feels great underfoot. Grey, khaki, or navy. Really any buffalo check indoor/outdoor would have me at hello.:)
B. Folk
Buffalo check, paisley, bold floral, elegant geometric…in a wide range of colors. In other words, do the same pattern in different color options (Neutrals, Blues, Greens, Reds, etc. for the same pattern offering). I almost never see a pattern that I like with a color/ combo of colors that I want. When I do, the rug is too expensive! I don’t need a big rug, either…6×8 would do. Definitely washable! After many years, a carpet needs more than spot-cleaning to refresh it.
Thanks for letting us provide input!
