Happy Monday!
The flooring for the Bungalow Barn was finally delivered a few days ago, and Steevenson wanted to show y’all what it looked like. 😉
Is he a cutie pie, or what? 🙂 Full disclosure: I told him we were going to take a picture of him with it so that we could show some people what it looked like, but I did not tell him to pose like that. That was all him! 😀 And that yellow mask? After he put his clothes on that morning, he decided that mask (worn as a headband) would be the perfect finishing touch for his outfit and he wore it like that until bath time that night- ha! Such a creative kiddo!
Here’s another look at of one of the planks:
It’s Swiftlock laminate flooring in the color Antique Hickory. It has little bumps and scrapes on it, and looks so much like real wood! I fell in love with it after seeing it in Jess Wasserman‘s house. Here are some photos from her Instagram feed:
I love that she used wallpaper in almost every room too! 🙂
And speaking of design inspiration from folks I follow on Instagram, I was inspired to select a few pebble tile samples for the shower floor in the Bungalow Barn, too. Jenna Sue used them in the bathroom she recently updated and I just love how it turned out:
Jim and Katie decided to go with the one on the bottom of that first pic. Here’s a photo of it by itself:
So pretty!
We’re going to line the shower walls in white subway tile…just have to decide if we should order the glossy one (pictured on the bottom, below) or the matte one (the one on top):
It looks like the matte one is a *little* more ivory-colored (which isn’t quite right), so it’ll probably be the glossy one on the bottom with a gray-colored grout.
The painters are here finishing up today, but hopefully I’ll have some flooring installation photos to blog about by the end of the week!
Stay warm, friends!

Steevenson is such a cutie. Love the mask!
We have pebble tile in a shower. Good: it isn’t slippery. Bad: it’s hard to clean. A friend used it in her entryway, and after a year or so, some of the pebbles came off (not suited to traffic, I guess).
We also used pebble tiles on the backspash above the sink. Looks great and doesn’t have the cleaning hassles of the floor.
Sarah
Just a note before you install the pebble shower. Our friends just did this and they do no like it. It hurts their feet standing on it after any length of time.

Wanted to add my thoughts on the pebble tile….used it in my previous home and it’s one of the things I would absolutely do again! Did not find it hard on my feet at all – just the opposite. It was like getting a foot massage with every shower. I sealed the grout after the tile was installed and never had a problem cleaning it. I used glazed white subway tile for the shower walls and it looked fantastic with the matte stones. The bathroom turned out so great that my contractor used photos in a marketing piece he put together. He was working in my neighborhood for months after that!

If the shower is big enough for a wheelchair will it roll easily on the pebble floor? Just a thought. Steevenson is such a cutie pie. He is a born model. Happy Thanksgiving!

Agree about pebble tile–absolutely NOT appropriate for old feet that lose their fatty padding w age. I have a pebble mat at our lake house, and nobody can stand on it long enough to shave–even my 30 year old son.
Jane
oh, my he’s so cute! We used the pebbles in our quest and master bath and I love it! Everyone is different, but we love the feel on our feet.
Jean
As an older person who has been through 23 different houses as well as most of the choices available for a shower and just finished remodeling a master bath, think about how the person will like the options as they age.
We did not like the texture of the pebbles & it hurt our feet as well as being a slight trip hazard. We went with a thick faux marble on the 3 sides of the shower and the same design faux marble on the floor except that the floor has a slight texture so it’s not slippery. No need for a rubber mat. We were so surprised at how safe it is. So-o-o-o-o easy to clean. We love the walls. Beautiful & no grout to clean! We’ve been using this shower for 4 months now and LOVE it. We had a teakwood fold down seat installed at the same time which we both love. We measured the tallest one’s behind and had it installed at just the right height. Of course there must be added support at the right height before the walls go up or it won’t last. You’re still really young & builders don’t often think like a senior but keep these things in mind. Love what you’re doing!

Steevenson is a natural model for you, his pose? And the yellow mask, live his style!
Now on to design choices, that flooring is amazing, sure looks like wood in the photos! Great mix of tile choices! We have glossy white subway in a bath, love the look but the gloss shows every water spot where a matte wouldn’t .
jessica
i also fell in love with Jenna Sue’s recent bathroom reno. excited to see your updates!
Mandy
You definitely see Steevenson’s little personality shine through in these pictures! He’s such a cutie! 🙂
We also have dark gray pebble tile floors in our master shower in our new house (been here less than 2 months). I was worried about how it would feel on my feet (would it hurt? Would it tickle? will it annoy me to no end every morning?) but honestly it’s been great! It’s very slightly bumpy, not at all a tripping hazard or painful to stand on for a long time — and believe me, I take REALLY long showers! 🙂 Maybe it has something to do with installation? The grout goes very close to the top of each pebble, so no large dips between pebbles. And my hubby sealed the grout, so we’ve had no cleaning issues (yet). Just a good wipe down has been enough. We did go with dark gray grout, so that helps. 🙂 The shower walls and bathroom floor are 12×24 white linen-finish tiles with light gray grout. The combo is GORGEOUS!
So looking forward to seeing the finished barn!
Layla
Thank you, Mandy!
And thanks for the info on the flooring…we’re so excited to get our pebbles in too! 😀

We are redoing our master shower. We are using white subway tile and gray grout, as well. I have not picked the “floor” yet. How does the pebble feel to stand on? Love how the barn is turning out!

Steevenson is so stinkin’ cute!

I agree with the majority above. Shower floor could be a problem for sensitive feet so I’d avoid it. Also have seen the collection of minerals on the floor so I would not go that route.
Love, love love the wood floor. It will always look nice because the coloring will hide a lot.
Steevenson is the best addition to the building project! Sooooo cute!

I swear Sweet P is a natural model. He looks like one of those charming kids you see in print ads. I already love him….you guys must be thanking God every day for him!!!!!

Layla, Just a warning about the grey grout with the white subway tile–we are moving into our brand new house THIS WEEK (yay for that) and our master bath shower is all white subway tile. Before they grouted the tile, my husband was standing in it and said that all the lines were giving him vertigo. Once they grouted the subway tiles with white, it was fine. I wanted to let you know in case your in-laws want to go in the shower before it is grouted to make sure they don’t have a negative reaction to all of those lines. All of those lovely choices are going to be gorgeous! Check out our progress at buildinghousemakinghome.com ~ Tina

Oh- thanks for the heads up, Tina! I was thinking of a light gray grout, so it sounds like that’s the way to go!

Can’t WAIT to see the pictures!!! Your son is just adorable!!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Lisa@NothingButBlueSkies
Gorgeous choices, with the cutest boy ever! Just to address the concerns that others brought up with regard to the pebbled floor on bare feet…I found some great options at Lowes that are cut completely flat, and so smooth. https://www.lowes.com/pd/Anatolia-Tile-Sunset-Impressions-Pebble-Mosaic-Wall-Tile-Common-12-in-x-12-in-Actual-11-81-in-x-11-81-in/1000009180
I think I am going to use it when I re-do my master bath.
Thank you for the awesome photo inspiration today. Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

The flooring is great. The model is totally awesome!

Love the flooring, can’t wait to see the pictures of it finished. Steevenson is a cutie patooty!!

That boy is so photogenic. He seems like he’s a bit of a camera ham! :-)) Loving his outfit.
I really like that laminate, it does look like real wood. And the color is perfection.
My two cents on the tile: I prefer matte look, but glossy will be super easy to keep clean, simply BECAUSE it shows everything. About the pebble tile – my daughter has it in their shower floor ( now about 4 years ) and she said she loves the massage-like feel of it, but that it is NOT fun to keep clean. ( she’s in her 30’s ) She said she would love to replace it, but her hubby doesn’t want to go to the trouble unless it’s necessary. I have stood on it, and it hurt my feet. ( I’m 62) I like the idea of it not being slippery, but I think I would do a smaller texture floor for us older folks.
We have a fiberglass shower with a swinging glass door in our new house, and I’ve already almost slipped getting out of the shower. If I could have a do-over, I would have a tiled shower, not dumb fiberglass, but we needed to keep costs down. :-/ Not worth my safety! ( Just my opinion – Jim & Katie will be the ones using it! )

Maybe Steevenson has a career in front of a camera. He’s a natural. 🙂 LOVE his mask. If he wants to wear it to church or some other public venue, let him! It will bring a smile to everyone!
Gorgeous decorating photos, as always.

I could just hug that child for days he’s soooo cute! I lOVE all your choices as always …..can’t wait to see it come together …..yippeee! It’s going to be GORGEOUS! XO
Colleen
Gosh, he is a cutie!!! Love all the updates on the Barn Bungalow! Happy Thanksgiving to you all.

Jenna Sue’s bathroom is one of my all time favorites, largely due to that gorgeous floor. After reading the comments here I’m going to be very curious how it ends up working out for you in a practical sense, and if it makes a difference on how you install it and seal it.
Steevenson is such a cutie! From the outfit to his smile and expressions. He’s going to steal some hearts. 🙂 Love the floor he’s showing off too. You’re getting to the fun part with the barn. Can’t wait to see it all come together!

Personally, I wouldn’t do pebbles. They’re pretty, but man, if you have foot issues like I do, they’re miserable to stand on.
Betsy Grandstaff
He is so adorable, hope it’s getting easier for all of you!
Angela D. Boone
Omgoodness, your boy is absolutely adorable. I just wanna squeeze him!
Kimberly
He is such a cutie pie. And yes, he has such style and a great sense of fashion that he is going to be a little heartbreaker.
What a great smile he has–you can see the “smile in his eyes and heart”!!! ?
Kimberly
Read through the comments and I agree about the pebbles that they might hurt your in-laws feet but I did clink on the link to the “smooth flat pebbles” at lowes. As long as they are not slippery, they might be a better option for them. You should get some samples and stand on them in your shower to feel the effect and hand your mother-in-law do the same.
As for the grouts, I get the vertigo as I have it as well due to a PE/emergency neurosurgery at 45. And even light grey grout can be dizzying to look at. So white definitely would be a better choice considering their age.

We are about to demo both bathrooms for a remodel. I’ve been looking for a subway tile in porcelain (which is difficult to find). All my research is showing using a ceramic non-vitreous tile has a high water absorption rate and can cause issues a few years later.
Have you had issues with ceramic tiles in showers?
Steevenson is adorable with the brightest smile 🙂

I see I’m not alone in warning you about the pebble floor. Love the look, AND the feel, but even if it is sealed, it STILL has to be cleaned and can be a real pain in the neck!
At some point you want the easiest maintenance possible, and this really isnt it. By the way, your son is just the cutest!!!

I have always loved your blog for many different reasons, but I’ll admit that I pop over now hoping to catch a glimpse of that beautiful little boy of yours!
Diana
Your little guy is just amazing! Oh that smile!
Renee
Steevson is so darn cute!!!! Does he pick put his clothes himself, because he is one sharp little dresser too!!!!! I love the pebble tiles and how they feel on my feet, wish I could use them in my master bath, but our bathroom is to cold, as it’s an addition over a crawl space, so tiles would be like ice on my feet in the winter.
Dorrie
I did my shower in white subday tiles and grey grout. It turned out amazing! Never regretted it. They will LOVE it!!
Beth Heim
I had the pebble (same style you’re choosing, but in the greens) shower floor for about 7 years. While they didn’t bother my feet, cleaning did become a problem after a few years.
Gray sanded grout,,,yes! Make sure you seal the tops (tops only) of the pebbles BEFORE you grout. It will keep the grout from getting into the little cracks and make clean up soooo much easier. Trust me on this one. I used an enhancer/impregnator sealer.
As for cleaning, do not use any bleach products. use a cleaner meant for natural stone. If you dye your hair, make sure your pebbles stay sealed, as it does wear off. Once a year should be ok. (the hair dye actually tints the pebbles). also, be careful you don’t get any divots when you are cleaning up after grouting. they will cause low spots where water will sit and eventually will permanently discolor the grout. Ask me why I know all of this 😉
hello haha narf
your son is so very handsome! that smile is infectious!
