Happy Friday!
I thought I’d share a few photos of the exterior and interior of the Bungalow Barn here today. For those that have been following along- things are really coming together this week! For those new to the barn build, in a nutshell, Kevin’s mom and dad (Jim & Katie) decided to sell their home and build a small (740 square foot) barn onto the back side of our house. Inside, they will have their own den and kitchen, as well as a breakfast room, master bedroom and master bathroom. Here’s a floor plan that shows how the barn connects to our existing house:
The walls will be clad in 1″x6″ pine planks, and the plumbing will be installed next week, but here’s where everything is at as of today:
Exterior:
Squeee! 😀 I just wanna pinch it’s board & batten-y little cheeks!! Oh, and speaking of board & batten, don’t mind those extra pieces inside those rectangles on the end. It was installed by mistake and will be changed out for X’s soon.
Breakfast Room:
This room wasn’t in the original plan, but Jim and Katie *really* needed their own space to eat meals and spread out the newspaper, so we added it on a few weeks ago so they’d have room to do that. It will have a 3-sided banquet on the left, like this:
They can accomodate a five-foot long table, and Jim’s scooter will be able to pull up where they’ve got that white X-based bench in the photo above. Neat, huh? It was a simple little build, and the guys recycled our old windows and siding- so that was a great cost-saver! There will eventually be a little wrap around deck on the outside of the breakfast room too, but we’ll get to that when we get to it.
Den/Kitchen:
Pardon all the extra boards laying on top of the trusses. The guys are still using them to walk around up there. The one vertical and two diagonal boards that stretch from the thick horizontal beam up to the ceiling are permanent, but they will be cased out so that they don’t look as puny as they do right now.
Master Bedroom:
There will also be a loft above their bedroom & walk-in closet, but I’ll have to show you that once the stairs are built. #I’mAllergicToTenFootLadders 😉
Master Bathroom:
Sorry for the warped photo. I was in a hurry and didn’t have my wide-angle lens on. That gives you an idea of where the shower is though. The vanity and commode will be on the right, and the washer/dryer area will be on the left.
If you missed and/or would like to see a video tour of the barn, just click the play button below:
I can hardly wait to see the walls and floors installed! Hoping to have photos of some of that within the next couple of weeks.
Have a great weekend, y’all!
PS- We haven’t received our approval email from USCIS yet, but that just means we’re one day closer to the day it’s going to pop up!

I don’t know how you are handling the suspense. I don’t know you and I am at a point in my life where I’m so glad my own two kids are away at camp, but I can’t stand your wait and keep refreshing to see if you’ve gotten news. I admire your faith in God’s plan (and I share it, some days, grudgingly) but I’m impatient for the uniting of your family and the beginning of the new journey.

Very, very nice! But I’m confused…the exterior shot has lovely, big, long windows and the interiors show little, high windows that it doesn’t look like you can see out of. ??? Can’t wait to see it finished!
AND can’t wait to see your family all together in this house!

The little high windows are on the other side of the build, they look to the neighbors lot. The big windows face Laylas and Kevins yard. Does that help?
Colette
I can’t believe how quickly it’s all coming together. How exciting!!

Looking great Layla! Question: what materials are you using for the exterior board and batten? I have an old board and batten cottage and am dreaming of an addition 🙂 Thanks!
Karlene
Oh my, how charming is that! I love the low Windows and the cupola, great choice on the weathervane too.
Having their own breakfast room will be great and looks like it fits there perfectly! How exciting to see this project take shape! You packed so much into less than 800 sq feet!

I read your posts (quietly) and love them! Thank you! I have a quick question! In the photo with the three-sided banquet, there is a table with a pedestal on the ends and an X tying them together. Any idea where it’s from? I’m building a table and that pedestal base would be perfect. Any info would help! Thanks!

Just picked up copy of The Country Journal! Page 3 and I recognize the gallery wall! How fun is this! I can’t wait to read the article! Congratulations!

I think I would love to be Jim and Katie?
Felicity
It’s looking so great! I’m excited for the finished product.

This is coming together beautifully. It struck me as I was looking at the overall layout how wonderful it will be for your little Sonny to grow up with his Mema and Papa so close to him. Or whatever he will call them, that’s our grandkids chosen names for us. :o)
Rachel
Love this project! How wonderful that Sweet Pea will have his grandparents so close by. Perfect! Lots of extra hugging and kissing for your darling son. The day you bring him home there will be celebrating and lots of tears for all your blogging friends. God is good! Can I get an amen?!
Donna
Omg I love the way the barn looks now. Can’t imagine how great it will be when it’s done. We are redoing our family room fireplace and I’m using yours as my inspiration. Thank you. I too am hoping you hear the final piece of news to make your journey to Sonny complete.
Brian
Well designed addition!
Out of curiosity, did you create that floor plan yourselves? If so, what software did you use?
Layla
Thanks, Brian! They had an architect draw the plans. 🙂

Oh.my.gosh. The outside picture is just D-I-V-I-N-E!!!!!!!! I think I squealed in my chair!
I may/or may not admit to that! The progress is amazing!
Hmmmmm and as for sonny boy, is anyone else feeling the 25th? Keeps coming up for me . . . Not sure what you’re going to hear that day, but I know for sure it will be good!
Everything is crossed here in Rhode Island for the 3 P’s! ? ????

Yay! It’s coming along great! Will you be putting a barn quilt in the upper box at the back? Never saw what you decided on the barn quilt. I love the breakfast room, so sunny! I noticed that you have an exit door now in the piano room, will you put one in by the closet, or will you just exit thru their breakfast room?
We are getting wired for electric now, drywall in about a week. Then my son in law gets to paint the entire inside before flooring. It’s looking like we may move in a week into September now. :-/ Hoped to be in by Labor Day, wah-wah.
I keep hoping to see your post for your approval – I’m sure you are on pins and needles! Y’all will have such a happy little “family compound” there, and it will be fun to look out a window and see Sweet P. entertaining his new grandparents! Have a wonderful weekend!
Catherine
It’s looking great and is so exciting! Thanks for sharing with us!

I can’t tell by the drawing where the barn is located.
Layla
It’s the den/kitchen, master bedroom and master bathroom, Vicky. 🙂

I have two things to say: First, I can’t imagine how GOOD it must smell in there right now!!! There is nothing like the smell of freshly sawn wood! Sigh. Second thing, that is probably the tidiest job site I have ever seen. Very impressive. Either your trades-people do a great job of cleaning up after themselves, or you got in there before the photos were taken. Either way, very nice! Can’t wait to see the finished project!!

Oh My! So functionally beautiful! Cannot wait to see the finished product. God Bless You Both. And, MoM, Dad and Sonny!
Mindy
This is just the best thing ever – what a way to honor Kevin’s parents!
Lisa w.
THIS is going to be awesome!!! I could pinch those white clad cheeks to???
Annie
This is so wonderful. And know what, Layla? As soon as I saw all that unfinished wood and plywood my brain filled in the aroma of wood shavings and construction sites. My dad was a builder and I love that smell so much!
Linda t
Love, love, LOVE! But I was wondering the same thing that another reader commented about… how will you be be entering your home from the parking area… through Kevin’s parents breakfast room? I don’t see any other entrance from the back.
Layla
Yep! We decided to share the back door to cut costs! 🙂
Joni Webb
This is so cute!!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to see the finished product, but the in between is so much fun too!!!
Meghan
I love the cupola and want to have one made for our house or detached garage and was wondering what size yours was.
Louise
The dress. I love it.
debbie rodriguez
Hey Layla!! I can’t wait to see it finished. What a wonderful thing to do for Kevin’s parents. I know it is going to be perfect.
Layla
Thank you so much, Debbie! We will be very blessed to have them so close. 🙂
Maryjane from Manitoba
Thank you for the photos!!!! You are so kind.
So happy for you on the progress. I’m as excited as though it were me about to pick paint colours and counting down to move in! Wow!
I’m like the others, I excitedly log on in hopes that you’re going to tell us you received the “magic email” to bring Sweet P home. Hugs!
Celeste
This is absolutely adorable and I really love the whole barn concept! I don’t know if this multi-generational living a growing trend or if it’s more related to the age we are (I’m 41) but we’re in the process of building a little 800 sqft house for my parents on our property too, and my husband’s two business partners are also both in the processes of building small homes for their parents/in-laws on their properties.
I’m sure Kevin’s parents are going to really enjoy being such an important part of little Sweet P’s life soon. There are no more important earthly relationships to nurture than family and all it’s generations!
Hyedi
Layla, you are stunning in that dress! I watched the video, heard everything you said, and I can’t help but ask; would you be so kind as to share the brand and where you bought your dress?
Jim and Katie are the luckiest parents in the WORLD to have you and Kevin.
Samie
I wish more families would live as closely as you are planning. Great for the older folks as well as the young ones. I am new to your blog…what paint colors are you using on the exterior?
